 Latest trends in fitness

Every year, a plethora of new ways to get fit hit the market. From the ‘ab rocker’ of the 90’s to the ‘Tae Bo’ of the 00’s, the industry has seen its fair share of fads and trends, as well as a few game-changers. Here’s what the experts think are the big trends in fitness right now and soon to come…

Wearable technology

It seems every other person has a fitness tracker wrapped around their wrist and this trend isn’t about to decline. Thanks to improvements in batteries which are becoming smaller and more flexible, more devices are expected to flood the market. Extending beyond the wrist band, we’re starting to see fitness jewellery, such as the Bellabeat Leaf which can be worn as a fashionable necklace, bracelet or broach.

Body weight training

It seems more and more fitness instructors are taking their clients away from the machines and back to the old-fashioned way of moving their own weight. Push ups, chin ups, handstands, lunges and even parkour style movements are being seen increasingly in the programs of personal trainers around the world.

Well-educated trainers

A combined force of the popularity of fitness shows, increased study options and the move towards holistic health has seen a growing cohort of qualified fitness specialists. Furthermore, to get the competitive edge, many of these professionals study complementary fields such as life coaching and nutrition.

Fitness for Baby Boomers

The Baby Boomer generation is very aware of the benefits of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and with more disposable income than their predecessors, many are willing to spend more on their wellness. Baby Boomers are increasingly spending money on the likes of one-on-one personal training sessions, pilates classes and other low-impact fitness regimes. Savvy fitness specialists are tailoring an offering to this lucrative audience.

Twists on the old favourites

Making workouts fun (and even a little quirky) is a trend that’s been spiking around the world. Possibly more ‘fads’ than ‘trends’, we’ve seen sing-a-long cycling, dancing in the dark, 80’s aerobics revivals and disco yoga, just to name a few!

Fitness apps with real incentives

Smart phone apps for fitness, such as ‘Couch to 5k’ have been in vogue for a while now. What we are now starting to see are apps being launched with an extra incentive to exercise. ‘Charity Miles’ incentivises you to get moving by donating a small amount of money (via a sponsor) to a charity of your choice for every mile your run, walk or cycle.

On more of a personal front, the app ‘Pact’ sees all members of the community wagering money for exercise and healthy living. Fail to meet a day and you lose money, but make your target, and you receive money.

In-store workouts

Retailers of athletic apparel are starting to offer instore fitness classes such as yoga, pilates or small court basketball. Savvy stores aren’t taking the responsibility themselves, however they’re pairing up with local gyms and personal trainers to make mutually beneficial packages.

Keep a lookout for In-store Workout Classes for Yoga, Pilates, etc.

These are just a few of the latest trends in fitness. Of course, you can always blaze your own trail and start your own.
